ok i have been reading for days now and i have to ask. i bought a 2000 limited from my uncles dealership and i wanted to know what i should do as far as check up or to catch it up to maintence speed. the expo was used for buisness the guy who traded it in said, but yet he had no records. the expo looks great inside and out but you never know how well people take care of the engine and what not. i had my uncles shop check it out and they said it looked good to them....the reasom i ask is beacuse i really like this car and what to keep it a long time but am a little scared of a ford with 60,000 miles on it. so what should i do or begin to do to make sure it last a life time? oil type? and what not

thanks already

synthetic 5w30 in the motor, swap the tranny fluid, maybe change plugs and wires, maybe flush and fill the radiator, maybe chade the diff fluid, check the iac and maf, clean both if dirty and have fun with it, if you take care of it it will last a long time. you can find tons of info with the search button too!

And Welcome!!!

so i should start to use synthetic even if i dont know what was used before? iac, mac? should i take it to ford or is this all stuff i could do. i have worked on many cars just never an ex!

yup synthetic oil No fram filter they are crap def change the tranny fluid, transfercase fluid, diff fluid change plugs and wires you will notice better performance after 60k. Flush the radiator get a new fuel filter and check the brakes. also clean the maf.

you can do all this your self except the tranny fluid. the plugs can be tricky to reach also

60k is nothing!!

Seriously... 60k on a 302. It's still in grade school!

I'd do your basic tune-up on it though:

Plugs
Wires
Fuel Filter
Tranny Filter
Flush the coolant system
Rear Diffy
Front Diffy (if you have one)
Air Filter (go with an open air K&N)
Maybe clean the MAF
Check the tire PSI and rotate them :D

Slap some exhaust on there too!

Good luck!

yeah Loud Pipes Save Lives

Why are you worried about 60,000? I've got 143,000, and someone here has one with over 400,000...

thanks

thanks for all the input i will start working on it this weekend. the reason i was worried was because you never know how other people treat there cars. so from what i am hearing here i should go aheah and switch to syn oil? and the rest of the stuff i can do or just take it down and have it done. where should i buy the oem auto parts? any ideas? thanks

ford parts network has good deals on some parts but a rip off on others such as a 100 dollars for the pcv valve for the sohc.

60k? thats just barely broken in!!
and frams are crap, i use purolator

Explorers don't hit mid-life until way over 100K miles; especially the V-8 models. ;)

Remember, these are solid bodies built upon a tough frame with one hell of a tough 8.8" axle. This ain't no power wagon or car. These Explorers (Minus the 3rd Gens) are trucks, and as such, they are built better. Abuse it, and she'll keep coming back for more. I like this relationship. ;)

Hey,

I was told by my Ford dealer that he has seen these trucks with 200,000 miles running well with regular care. he also did say he has seen them worn out at 60,000.

It all depends on how it drives, chances are it is pretty smooth, and if it is, I would change the oil, the antifreeze, the transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, and front and rear differential fluids, fuel and air filter and I would also lubricate all of the hinges, door locks, hood, and tail gate. I know that my truck had the 100,000 mile tune up, and yours may to. Unless it runs poor and is missing I would not change the spark plugs and wires until it reached 100k.

These trucks are tough and solid, they are reliable and nice to drive, you wont be dissapointed.
