Sorry guys,
Been on the internet and here trying to establish what needs doing to my truck! Bought it kinda blind... i.e. little service history, so just wondered what recalls/ major problems affected this model. (in the UK of course!)

It has the infamous start up rattle / poor idle problem that I was aware of and will get sorted. Interestingly when warm, it only idles badly on LPG and not so much on gas....

Any thoughts?

Otherwise a great truck in great condition for 131k miles....

Regards

There was a link somewhere on this site to look up recalls
AFAIK the onkly one for uk is the cruise control cable with inline fuse. If you pop into your local dealer they can look up recalls using your reg or vin. If yours hasn't had the cruise control done you should then book it in to get done as if it goes it will go up in flames. (free to get done, just the hassle)

As for the start up rattle;
look to see if you have the updated tensioner bolt, if not then you may get away with just doing the 00m12 kit. The kit comes with upper and lower manifold gasket rings that will probably cure the idle problem to. Oh and check the plugs!!!

Cheers JanO

Can you just explain the last bit in Stoopid-talk.. i.e., how do I tell if the tensioner bolt is new or old?

Otherwise all will be juicy... Anyone know why the idle might be rough on LPG but not on petrol? Drove all day today (apart from the cold start dodgy idle-stall-fast idle etc, etc) with not-so-much as a falter in the revs. But put it into lpg and we fart and wobble all over the rev range from 500-1500rpm at a stand-still...
Oh and again on LPG only, on an uphill run in high gear at about 40-50mph, hitting the gas produces a rev reduction and twice a pop in the engine? Sounds like fuel/air mixture to me???? And somewhere in the LPG lines as it don't do it on petrol..

Cheers for anyones input.

Ok i'll try
If you look under the throttle body at the inside edge of the left head you will see a 27mm headed bolt. Not shown too well in the photo but the location is in the red circle

You can see on this next photo that the same location has a bit of an extension tube about an inch or so on top of the bolt. This is the updated tensioner, so in escence if you have the old version you will just have a flat headed bolt head but if you have the updated version you will see the tube sticking out

Now in the next picture you can see the updated tensioner bolt and at the top is a new rear (for the other head) which is what the old front tensioner looks like.

Also next to the new tensioner in the last photo you can see a plastic pencil thingy which is put into an oil gallery next to the tensioner to help stop the oil draining away from the tensioner when not running, and lastly you can see the new orings for the upper and lower intake manifolds.

If you have the tools, mechanically it is not a difficult job to do with a bit of patience and common sense. There are a few guides on how to on this site.

Un common tools would be T30 torx bit, uj + wobbler joints for socket set and a 27mm deep socket or 27mm spanner. (ideally the socket so you can torque to spec)
Hope this helps

I should add that this is the first thing to try to cure any minor rattle. But you could have further problems with the tensioner guide for the chain for the crank to jack shaft, tho yours being a later version is likely to have the updated one as this was a common failure on earlier engines. Tho this would usually rattle at higher revs than idle. The front and rear cassettes can also fail (the guides/chains that run from the jack shaft to the cams) and lastly the balance shaft chain tensioner can fail.
If you look up some info threads by 2000StreetRod they are very informative.

On your rough running on gas it could be plugs. I beleive jcasey did a thread about them relating to altering the gap and running copper rather than platinum. You may also find that they are very old and the gap is waaaay to big (mine were about 2mm but it ran fine tho i only have petrol)

Hi guys, I believe you can get spark plugs specifically for running LPG. Can't remember where I read it now though. Might be worth a google.

Kevin,
Are these plugs purely for LPG only or can they run duel fuel gas/petrol?

cheers everyone for the help

Hi Simon.
From what i've found out they are NGK LPG Laser Line.
For a Ford Explorer; LPG5 Stock Number 1516.

Do a search for ' NGK LPG Laser Line' and you should get all the info you need.
Cheers Kev.
