I'm looking at buying a 2000 Explorer XLT with the SOHC 4.0 V6 and automatic trans.

During the test drive the tranny shifted very crisply, almost like it had a "shift kit" installed. It did this from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Very, hard abrupt shifts with no slippage.

About 10 miles into the drive I pulled the tranny dipstick. The fluid was light brown (not red) and when I pulled the dispstick cap from the tube a large puff of smoke came out of the tranny dipstick tube.

The dealership says the smoke is not unusual, I think otherwise.

Is the tranny in for trouble?

That does not sound good at all. Slight discoloration is ok, but I have a feeling that transmission hasn't been serviced or flushed. Whats the mileage on that thing? What dealer is this - Ford or a used dealership?

it has 69000 miles. it is a local trade in at a local toyota dealership.

it seems as though every used suv on the lots has some drivetrain problem!
