2001 Ford Explorer XLT, Just had a DEI Sidewinder model 6500 ESP with remote start installed I have the chipped key/anti-theft from the factory. I was told to buy the DEI 556sw for it, but the remote start still did not work without the key right next to the ignition. Is there another way to get it to work short of pulling the chip out and gluing it inside the column?
One other thing the Keypads sometimes work and sometimes don't alarm was brand new but 10+ yrs old could it just be the batteries? It was all brand new bought it along time ago just never installed it until now.

I agree with BradR, the rings are too finicky. Use the XK04 or, at my work, I use all iDatalink pieces. The ADS-TBSL-KO, TI, or CA will work perfect.

The keypads have nothing to do with it, if it works with the key next to it, then it should always work. It sounds like you didn't program it. You have to have two keys, and keep them separated while doing this. Install the chip as close to the ignition cylinder as possible Put one key in, ignition on, wait for the security light to go out. take that one out and put the second key in, wait for the security light to go out. Now, some fords you can just remote start it now and will program the chip, others they need like 10 seconds or so, the following is for that. First way of doing it(and the way I do it with my Autopage remote starts) is putting the remote start in diesel wait to start mode, find it in the manual and change it in the settings for it. It will then wait for the allotted time (usually do 15secs) and then remote start giving you enough time for the chip to program. If your remote start doesn't have wait to start then after the 2nd key you need to quickly hook up a jumper from 12v to ignition and put the new chip next to the key cylinder. After either of those steps wait for the security light to turn off and it is now programmed.

Hope it helps.

I don't mean the remote start I meant the remotes in general do not work I can have both and sit there and push any button with no luck. I replaced the battery's and the same continues. I was able to pull the remote apart and push the button directly on the board inside and it disarmed finally. I think the remote is not getting good contact (like I said 10+ yrs old) DEI most likely fixed this problem as I no longer see these remotes the replacement is different. I do have some old python 4-button remotes that are supposed to work, and I found a new Viper replacement today.
