Hi everyone! I am a new member and I am seeking help with a problem that has been more of a nuisance right now but I am hoping to get input that will allow me to fix it before it becomes an issue on a trail. I just bought a 2001 Explorer Sportrac. Runs great with a couple of issues. Your input is greatly appreciated!

1. Normal pulling out of a parking space the engine idles down and the steering shudders (vibrates ever so slightly). I almost feel like the engine is going to stall out. A little more gas and the issue is mute but I can't help but think there is something wrong with steering pump or engine.

2. Gas prime seems to be lost on downslope hill parking. Usually, with less than half tank full of gas but I think it has happened on full tank too. Only way to remedy is to get to flat level ground and it starts right up no fail. So my downslope parking issue is my greatest concern right now because I work on a hillside and quite frequently the only parking available is downslope parking.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer!

Best Regards,

Rick

Problem #2 stems from the Fact that the Fuel tanks in these vehicles Have the Fuel pick up in the rear of the tank . So that why when you are parking downhill and with low fuel you having problems.

Remedies would be to run more fuel in the tank or get to work earlier and grab one of them uphill parking spots.

I have a hunch about the other problem but i see what others say about it first

I conquer with Cybergasm about #2. Yeah, I had 1/4 full tank once on an off road trail and had it die on me when I was facing downwards in a ditch on the trail. I had to be pulled to level ground again before starting it.

#1 - My truck has always had the low idle steering shudder too. I've just ignored it for the past 10 years. I've never had my engine die on me from it.

Just roll down the hill in neutral until you get to the bottom. Sorry can't give any help on this one, I live in flat south florida.

Thanks!!

thanks for the replies. I have been keeping more gas in it and well that works. I sure wont be headed onto any trails with out a full tank. The steering/engine idle issue still worries me.
