i have an '02 4.0 that the motor is stuck. It ran, then parked overnight. when trying to start it the next day, the motor turned over 2 times, almost started then back fired (or popped-sounded funny) then the starter would just click. So thought it maybe a bad battery connection and cleaned the battery post. that did not help. then took off the starter thinking it may be a starter wire or the starter itself all that seemed ok. I then took the starter off again and took a screwdriver and tryed to turn the motor over using the flywheel. It would not budge either way. took a pipe wrench on the harmonic balancer and still did not budge either way. acts like something is "wedged" somewhere or something. Ran good, did not over heat when drove day before??? It has 170,000 miles. could the timing chain have broken and wedged on the crank?? or something else?

Same thing happened to mine. Dropped the lower oil pan and found timing chain tensioner parts inside. I talked to a local shop and they said to get the engine back in time after replaceing the timing chain you have to buy a tool from Ford which runs about $400-$500. So Im looking at a rebuilt motor. wish you luck.

Timing chain broke and piston is against a valve sounds like. Time for the engine to come out.
