2002 dim message center

The message center in my 2002 EB is so dim that I can't read it during
the day when the sun is bright. It is OK at night, but never as bright as
the radio, for example. The dealer says the only way to fix it is to replace
the instrument panel (speedo, etc.) at great expense. I am not confident
that would fix it.

Has anyone had this problem? What did you do to fix it or get it fixed?

Please respond, it is a bummer not being able to read the message center
during the day.

Does the unit dim properly with the gauges? There is a good chance that the m/c is defective.

Yes, the unit does dim properly with the gauges. Also, in the evening when I
can see the thing, it dims when you turn on the headlights, just like the gauges
and the radio and climate control readouts.

I noticed also that in the evening, it is dimmer than the radio and climate control
readouts and dimmer than the gauges. Maybe it is always dim and I just can't
see it when the sun is out.
