Ok, 2002 EB v-6/auto/4x4, i've been having an intermitent starting problem for about 6 months on my SUV, but just recently it got to where it won't start anymore. We've tracked it down to eithher the PCM, or something that give the PCM commands. Basically you turn the key on, everything turns on like its gonna start, and you can tell if it's going to actually crank by watching the security light, if its not gonna start, it starts flashing, otherwise it'll crank, my and my dad went though the whole starting system and tested everything, he pulled the relay apart, and if you manually engage it, it'll crank the car, but not start. When you turn it to crank it, its getting power to the relay, just not the ground, which is what the computer does. Anybody have anything similar to this, or know what could cause it? I seem to think it has something to do with the intergrated security system, just don't know where to look or how to test. I'll probably just have to take it to a ford stealership.

PATS II key system. Your keys have transponders in them it sounds and like you PCM is forgetting the Key, the flashing security light means it thinks the wrong key is inserted. Couple of guys who had battery problems had to have it towed in to ReProgram the Keys into the PCM the engine won't start without the correct key. And you need two working keys to program the third.

I still have a second key that I haven't tried, will it still work with that, or is the actual ignition un-programed, not the main key?

if the PCM forgets the key it won't matter which one, because it's essentially forgetting the code in the key, not the actual key. Looks like you''re going to have to have it towed and reprogrammed. If you have Triple A this should be a relatively cheap thing to do, if not it's going to be cost of towing + prolly 80$ to reprogram your keys.

ok, thanks:cool:

try the second key first, if not - a trip to the stealership.

well, i tried the second key and no dice, so looks like tomorrow its gettin towed in to be reprogrammed:thumbdwn:

nuts, i was lucky my key broke in half so i was able to drive it there to get the second key programmed They Charged me $45 (1/2 hour) to program a key I had bought off fleabay.

As a tip once you get two working keys, buy another with PATSII and program the third key for yourself. Some guys are saying a Focus All-in-one will work. When you take it too your hardware store or whatever and have them cut it but you have to program it yourself in the truck. That way if you lose one, you can avoid another trip to the dealer and another $45.

this evening I randomly went out and tried to crank it and it started like nothing was wrong, so I immediately took it to the dealership, they were closed so I just left it. Once I got there, I turned it off and tried to start it right back up and it wouldn't start again!!! Hopefully its just the re-programming.

ended up being a combo of 2 things, the PATS module in the steering column has an "intermitent short" and the harness to that module was damaged. 400 bucks later it seems fine.
