Looking for some tips on replacing the rear differential on a 2002 Explorer . After 7 years of semi faithfull operation the rear finally gave up. I am a fairly good shade tree mechanic but the years are catching up with me. I'm sure that some of you younger guys have come up with some short cuts and labor saving tricks. Help an old man out here. Thanks:us:

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials section. Everything is bolted on, so swapping isn't that hard. The tricky part is on the rear brakes. You could rebuild your differential instead of replacing it.

Thanks for the reply!! What's the tricky part on the brakes?

You have to disconnect the parking brake cable, and the rear brake lines. The ABS system requires a special bleeding procedure to get the air out of the lines. The HCU will need to be cycled while being bled.
