I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer with AWD-4HI-4LO buttons.

Do any of these options actualy lock the front or the rear differential (or both)?

Can the following be prevented ?:

Let's say I'm stuck in the deep snow.
The left part of my car (both left wheels) are on snow and the right side wheels are on ice, both spining. The left ones which would have traction do not move at all. So I'm stuck.

Can I somehow lock the diff. - so the wheels would spin on both side equally ?

One subquestion: why the 4LO can be engaged only in Neutral ?

thank you!!!

No, you'd have to install an aftermarket locker in one or both differentials. Stock diffs were either open or limited slip rear, and neither will provide any traction in the situations you're describing.

You have to put the transmission in neutral to engage 4LO because the transfer case range gears aren't synchronized... you have some slop in the driveline in order to get the gears to mesh.

The differentials are all mechanical, no switching. For a keeper vehicle, buy a Zexel Torsen, it should last as long as you own the vehicle. They have been $390 from Reider Racing, and are great and smooth. Good luck,
DonW
