2002 Explorer sport 4wd not switching on

On my 02 Explorer sport my 4wd hasn’t worked since I bought it. Of course I’ve considered it can be the motor, but want to be sure first. When I turn the switch to either hi or low 4wd, the indicator lights don’t light up at all. That makes me wonder if it could be anything else like the switch. If it’s a problem with the motor, wouldn’t the indicator lights still come on? Does anyone know what fuse it could be if it were the problem. If it makes any difference, the dome light also doesn’t come on when the drivers door is open, but does when the passenger door is.

The system looks at a few signals from elsewhere in the truck to know if it's safe to engage 4H and 4L. You may have an issue with either the speed sensor, transmission range selector (Or clutch position in a manual) or the brake position sensor. There may be others, I'm shooting from memory here... your dome light issue is not related, that's probably just the switch in the door jam.
