2002 Explorer Sport
Hi Guys! I decided to join because I am unable to determine a current problem with my 2002 Explorer Sport, automatic 4x2. While driving, it simply stalled. The key does absolutely nothing! Doesn't attempt to crank or anything! I have had several mechanics look at it but all are stumped. I am in venezuela, the current communist regime here has made it virtually impossible to find auto parts thus I turn to you guys for advise! One mechanic tried to start it directly from the relay and even though it tried to crank, it did not start! I would appreciate it very, very much if someone could orient me regarding this problem and what can I do to fix it! Notes: I recently replaced the transmission, I removed an aftermarket alarm system as well as checked all the fuses... Please help!

It sounds like a problem with PATS, and given your comment about removing an aftermarket alarm system, I would guess that is the source of your problem. There's probably something screwed up in the wiring.

Welcome. If it died while driving like stated above check all the wiring that was connected with the alarm, something might have worked loose, & also check the fuel pressure while cranking the engine your fuel pump might have gone bad.

Keypad?

Hi RB! I do not have any sort of keypad for entering numbers in my explorer. It does not have the original radio. I am convinced you are correct about the PATS, but have no idea how to reset it.

PATS is different from the fob/keypad entry options. There is a lot of PATS information in the sticky thread.

If the PATS system is no longer recognizing your keys, you will need a dealer scan tool to program them back in. But from your description, I doubt that is what happened. I think there is some damage left over in your wiring from the alarm system that was removed. Those systems tap into all the related wiring to add their functionality, and they are often poorly installed. It is likely that a wire is broken somewhere. You could diagnose the PATS symptoms, or you could start with a careful inspection of the wiring where the old alarm was wired in. I suspect you will find the problem somewhere there, and when corrected everything will start working again. Another possibility is that the PATS receiver on the steering column near the ignition barrel has a fault.

I though PATS disables spark/fuel, but the engine should still turn over.
When the guy turned it over, was the key in the on position?

Check fuses, relays, wiring and perhaps the ignition.

Key was on ON position

Hi!
The key was in fact on ON position and still the engine did not start. It cranked healthily but appeared as if it was simply not getting electricity to the engine. I am fearing that the mechanics here in Venezuela are not knowledged in this area. The remaining Ford dealers are swamped with vehicles due to the reduction of numbers of authorized dealers. It is a shame to have this truck sitting in my garage without knowing what the heck is wrong with it!

Problem solved!

Hi guys!
I finally resolved the problem. It was a combination of shift cable being broken thus unable to place in PARK and some wiring withing the sterering column also worn out. Now however my overdrive is not functioning, the OD light is intermitent and it does not kick in...
