2002 XLT V8
I have a 2002 Explorer V8 XLT with the towing package.

What is happening is when it is in gear and you accelerate it jurks or shutters. It is not all the time usually from 25- 45mph. The rpm's never increase while this is happening. I recently was pulling a pop up camper 120 miles and did not happen once. When there is no load it happens pretty frequently.

The dealer said it was the solenoid pack inside the tranny.
I am afraid to stick 800+ dollars into it and it not be the problem.

this is what my dealer said when I had it looked at.

Part Number 7G391 and it works with both the 5R55S and 5R55W transmissions.

any suggestions?

The solenoid sounds like the problem. Its weird though that it only happens durinh light load times.

Those solenoid packs really have a short life span, in Toronto here all the tranny shopshave explorers on their hoists changing that part. One shop had a pack go and it broke a couple bands and broke the case.

Guess its just a matter of time before I start feeling that hard shift. Ford should be doing something about this, heard they have a oil additive from ford that increases solenoid life is this true?

The solenoid packs definetly have a short life span, and if you ask me the additive is just a way for FORD to quiet people from complaining about the transmission problem. I had the additive added and no fix yet. Contacted FORD. They want me to e-mail them with all my repair information (why I dont know they should have it all on their computers) They say they are handling further action on a case by case basis??? I will let you know what happens

02 Explorer Jerking too

Hi everyone, I am having the identical same problem with my 02 V8 Eddie Baurer. Mine is at the dealership now and has been for 2 weeks. Did the solenoid pack cure the jerking? I would like to pass this onto the dealership working on my Explorer. Thanks.

When searching through the TSBs on this model with the v8 - there seems to be a lot of PCM reprograms for the transmission. Many for harsh shifting and shuddering.

02 Explorer Jerking

Hey Drew, Yes I found all of the reprogramming issues and mine was reporagrmamed twice recently too, I forgot to tell you guys that at 45,000 Ford put in a remanufatcured tranny and never gave an explanation. I have noticed no difference between either transmission, the problem still remains and is an intermittent problem that happens about 75% of the time. Every Ford mechanic (5 now) that drives my Explorer agrees that something is wrong but nobody can pin point the problem.

ismatts, how many miles do you have? I just bought a used 2002 w/68K and no problems yet.

Solenoid block

I just replaced the solenoid block in my '02 XLT myself. Took two hours, cost about $263.00 with everything. Cured my symptoms. I had some shudder. Most of my problem was the slow engagement into reverse and then drive. Sometimes it leapt into gear, sometimes you had to set up a transit to see if it was moving. :(
It took about 2 hours from start to finish. Not a hard job. :D
And mine is driving like new now.
