It seems that my wife's Explorer is wanting to fall apart lately lol. When you pull the key out the whole switch tumbler assy wants to come out with the key. You have to hold it as you pull the key out. One time the ignition wouldn't even turn so I had her bang around the switch to get it free.

Has anyone come across this problem? She is wanting to take it to the stealership but I would like to avoid that cost if i can. I just had surgery with plate and screws in my wrist so I'm down to one hand. I have someone that can help moe though. Thanks!

You need a new lock cylinder (tumbler). Get new one have it keyed to your existing keys. If you do not have it keyed to your existing key you will have to reprogram the new keys for the PATS or you will not be able to start your car and you will need to carry two keys, your old one to unlock the door and the new key that starts the car. Easiest is to have new cylinder rekeyed. You just slide the new one into the steering column. The pin that holds the old cylinder is worn out.

you could possibly key it up yourself, but if you aren't comfortable doing so then a locksmith can do it easily enough. might not even charge you since it comes with the wafers and springs. you wouldn't have to have it reprogrammed because your key is still programmed.

Thanks man! I did some research on the keying and may give it a try. Appreciate the help!
