Hey guys, newcomer here...but anyways, Okay so I am currently looking at a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4. It has all the bells and whistles, such as sunroof, running boards, leather, etc. The best part? Its only 4k! It does have 101k miles, however, and it needs new rear brakes and I guess the gas gauge is screwy...1 minute it'll be full, the next minute itll be empty. So my question is, for only 4k, I am really considering this car, however, I've read the trans are questionable and so are the gas gauges. Should I do it? Also, how much would it be to get new rear brakes and the gas gauge fixed? Thanks!

be aware of if the rear end whines, also check to make sure the coil springs aren't cracked, the 4wd control module is subject to failure, and yes, the tranmissions suck.

But for only 4K I would prolly go for it.

Take it to Autozone and get any DTCs read.

Why are you paying for the repairs? Is this a private party sale?

The gas guage is a TSB - a dealer should fix that; the brakes vary depending on what you need done - from rotors to pads, etc... could run $50-$150, etc depending on where you go also...

Yeah its a private sale.

And what do you mean "a dealer should fix that"...? Do you mean its like a recall or something? Is it gonna be free?

So all in all, to fix that, what would I need and how much would that cost? I'm not good with cars, but I don't want to get ripped off or anything :[

I can't say, but brakes are inexpensive, it's the labor that's going to cost... Maybe someone in your area can refer you to a reputable company or the dealership can give you an estimate - but they charge to do an inspection.

if you do the rear brakes yourself $255 or thereabouts total, if you pay someone, add to that another big labor charge. FYI, depending on the miles and condition, you will need Rear Disk pads $60, rotors $110, and since the parking brake is toast - rusted, you will also need the parking brake shoes $60 and a parking brake kit $25.
Very costly hopefully you know someone. . .

Wow! This is one where the owner should make a 50/50 repair deduction or something...
