Last winter when I turned the knob to put it into 4x4 it would not engage until the cab of the truck was warmed up. Once it was warm I could turn the knob to 4x4 and it would engage. I have not used 4x4 since then so today I go to put it in 4x4 and it does not engage at all.

Any ideas what it would be? I am thinking some kind of sensor. I tried searching under 4x4 not engaging and did not find anything.

Thanks

when you first start your truck and all your gauges and idiot lights are going through their self tests......does your 4wd and 4wd low lights light up in the dash and go off?

if they dont....you need to replace your control module. its located behind the passenger side kick panel.

Thanks so much. I will check and see tonight. If they do come on what would the issue be?

I had a similar problem with the `96 Explorer I used to have. I found that by exercising the switch many times it eventually started to work.

I tried that no go but ty. Anyone else?

I had same problem with mine - do you hear a clicking in pass kick plate when engaging 4x4 - if so maybe control module is OK - you either need to get a new 4x4 motor or clean the contacts of the one you have - I bought a new motor (refurb) online for 70 but it dod not work - pin outs were wrong - had to buy motor from ford - motor is easy to remove - 4 small bolts and its out. good luck

Thanks So what you are saying is if there is a clicking noise just replace the motor or clean contacts.

What if there is no clicking noise would it be the module?

Any pics on how to replace the module and the motor?

Thanks

If there is a clicking noise coming from right kick panel then MAYBE the module is OK - power is getting to it - To get to the module remove kick plate - you will see black module - it will say 4X4 CCM module - the motor is underneath drivers door and bolts in to the xfer case - search this site - there are some detailed pictures as to what it looks like and how to clean contacts - hope this helps
