Picked up an '02 Mineral Grey Mountaineer 4.6 AWD with 33k last night

It runs amazing, very smooth, no rattles, no noises and my fiance loves it. It has many options.

I just got done searching '2002 mountaineer' on google and I read some threads and 98% were complainging about tranny problems. I'm scared that this is going to happen to my fiance. What should I do?? Should I change the filter and fluid now at 33k miles? or just buy a spare one now and just wait for it to slip?

Mine has 132000 miles and is ok. If it ever goes out, I'll probably just get one from a junk yard.

How much did you pay? Probably has seen very gentle use. :)

I got it at my dealership. They were asking 10k. 33k miles Imaculate interior, both bumpers have some scrapes. no dents or anything on body, only paint that was done was to the rear glass applique which always crack so thats almost expected.

wow, that is low miles and a good deal. My very similar (down to the color) '02 Ex just turned 95K miles.

I would have the tranny fluid changed but not flushed if I were you.

these suvs are known for tranny problems. Best advice is to keep up on the service intervals and you should be fine.

wow you got a better deal then me, and I got a steal. I got the same exact truck and color except mine is an 03 and I just turned 60K last week. Had to have a servo replaced in the trans (under warranty) but other than that it runs great. You'll have a lot of fun with it.

I love my 02 mounty. I picked it up at a friends lot for 7500. 105k miles with ext warranty. I have had it a year and no issues. I do notice the trans hesitating into third (me an my transmission issues), but I am not terribly worried.

At 33k, I would recommend picking up an aftermarket warranty as that truck has lots of life still in it. If the Tranny goes, then you will be safe. The stories about bad transmission are popular because there are so many on the road. You will always hear about the bad more often than the positive.

2nd expo for me, with more to come.

Notwithstanding your excellent price, I would be worried about that transmission, since a failure could easily jack up the costs of ownership by several $K. Even if the tranny is not hesitating, I would change the fluid if not already done.

I bought my '02 a little over two years ago. It had about 85k on it then. It has 125k on it now. I had the fluid and filter changed at about 100k and so far no tranny problems. I do not know what was done maintenance wise to it prior to my owning it.

I did have to replace both rear wheel bearings. Keep an eye on them as they are known to go out on these trucks. If you hear a whine from the rear that changes as you turn right or left then they are going out. I got both of mine changed for $700 so it is not a real bad hit.

I bought my wife an 02 (4.0) mounty 3yrs ago, We bought it with 65,000 miles for $13,500 it now has 80,000 miles on it, never had any problems. I changed both front and rear brakes put new tires on it and change the oil every 3,000. I bought my self one this april (02 mounty V8) it has 160,000 miles on it and is need for a brake job in the front. This past weekend I changed the intake (plastic lower had a hairline crack in the coolant passage) and put new plugs in. You would never know it has 160,000 on it.

It does have a miss now I think it may be a coil..

i had the exact same trans issue....dealer replaced a servo and it seemed to fix it.

I have an aftermarket warranty (who knows how good it is) for the next 2 years. I am very happy with this truck. It is much more truck than my 94 ever was. As far as the filter/flush, it is on my list of things to knock out. I just have to make an appt with the dealer for the change and serve replacement.

Love Love Love my mounty. Next up is flo 50suv and intake.

I had to replace the a4ld on my 94 3 times, so I try to push the upkeep early on this truck.

heh i feel the same and plan to do the same except im going with a 40 series; I like the deeper louder tone.

Nice deal! Now why cant i come across a deal like that!!!??

Even know I did buy it at the dealership I work for its all still taxed so with intrest rates and all it put it up to around 10k anyway.

When I bought it the drivers side door panel silver trim was half way ripped off and the drivers seat makes knocking noises when moving foward or back. They don't want to replace either for me so I'm a little unhappy with that.

man my 02 mounty has just been a pain since the day i bought it ($3250)
with 104k. the guy i bought it from knew about a tranny problem and told me that it would need to be rebuilt. so after i bought it i was under the impression that it would be great after that. got it rebuilt now the engine is knockin like crazy. so i will probably need to replace/rebuild that soon. i got $7500 into this thing already and is already over bluebook. hope you have better luck then me.
