Hey

I just purchased a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac for a steal of a deal. The guy hit a large dog and air bags deployed. Needs new hood, headlights, and the air bags replaced.

Has anyone ever dealt with air bag replacement. I can not find any information on it, what all do I need to buy, is there a kit available. Both air bags deployed. Do I just need to buy air bags or the whole kit???? Any help is much appreciated...

Thanks for any help!!

Both airbags in my '01 deployed sometime before I bought it. I found a replacement for the driver's side, but haven't installed it. I asked a similar question a while back, and someone said there are sensors that probably need reset or replaced, which likely requires a dealer to be involved. And you have to replace both for either to work, according to others. I think the driver's bag has to be intact to operate the horn, but then my horn is disconnected, so maybe not. Not sure about the passenger side, but the driver's side bag has to be from an '01-05 Sport Trac or '01-03 Sport. Some of the Explorer airbags look to be the same shape, but the wiring connector is different. Airbags are available on ebay, some are even NOS, but some have said the Ford dealers won't install or activate the bags and sensors unless you buy from them and they install them for liability reasons. $$$$$

Depending on where you live than you're going to have to do salvage or "R" rebuild title to make it street legal and to register it again. You'll need the sensors, bags, wiring and have a certified tech reset them for you (again depending on local/state laws and restrictions). Where are you from? I would look into the states vehicles laws to find out what all is required there to put the vehicle back on the road. Also the computer/ PATS system may be locked which is why you need a certified tech to unlock/ reprogram the system. Someone else will chime in with more information but I would check the states website for information about making the vehicle road legal again before you shell out too much money and possibly find out it's more than the trucks worth.
