Have an 02 explorer with the 4.6L V8 and it stalls at idle and runs rough at about 40-50mph. Checked for vacuum leaks and none found also no codes stored in the computer. It spits and sputters at around 40-50mph and stalls at idle but no service engine soon light and no codes. Any suggestions on what it Might be?

Check your engine coolant temp sensor. This sensor when faulty will show all those symptoms you just mentioned. Im having the same issue with my 06 4L EB almost bought some parts but a friend of mine working at dealership told me to diagnose the ect sensor. Found it faulty replace it car runs like its new. Its worth a try checking it though and it Wont hurt you wallet.

2002 Explorer

I have changed out the plugs and it ran a heck of a lot better but still hesitstes and stalls.

IAC and throttle body cleanup?

I would clean those as well as the MAF sensor and EGR valve and see if that helps then start thinking about parts.

I had a little rough idle (not as bad as yours) I claned all four of those things and swapped what looked to maybe be the orginal fuel filter and now it idles smooth as new with 175000 miles

2002 Explorer engine stalls

I have cleaned the MAF & IAC and still stalls. Next step will be to replace the fuel filter. Thanks for the suggestions.

Get the metal fuel line release tool.
I struggled for an hour and a half with the plastic one before I went out to buy the metal tool. Once I had the metal one the line came off effortlessly.

Well the explorer still hesitates, stalls and now overheats. Guess ill check the engine coolant temp sensor. Any other ideas, still no codes stored.
Update changed the ECT and still runs like crap and overheats. Guess it's time to sell this headache unless anyone has any ideas of what else it may be?

2002 Explorer V8 overheats HELP!!!

2002 Explorer V8 overheats, changed the thermostat, temp sensor, water pump and fan clutch and still overheats. Any suggestions? ?????

For the overheat issue try running Collingwood system cleaner per instructions. Sounds like it's not flowing. Also, are you sure the thermostat is in correctly?
