My 2002 explorer tranny will not go above 20 mph. Then it will slip and not engage at all. I need to shut the car off and turn it back on to drive it again. I drove it 7 miles to the auto shop and will report on what they find. It seems to me that it slips between 1st and 2nd then loses engagement. My CEL came on about halfway through the 7 mile trek as did the OD flashing light. Any ideas before the shop calls back?

I am also having a similar Tranny issue, have not brought mine into shop yet.
Please reply with what was found with yours.

Had some similair issues and I ended up having to do a rebuild, luckily I have a friend who does tranny work for a living and he cut me a deal with no labor costs just parts.

These symptoms are common with a broken intermediate belt and probably servo piston cylinder damage...if you keep driving the truck you will score the direct clutch drum...as it is right now you will have to do a complete overhaul...mine is in the shop right now with these exact symptoms and this is what they said. I'm lucky to have purchased the Ford extended warranty and I'm covered, the dealer quoted this job as 4k after taxes...my pay out will be the 100 dollar deductable... I can't stress it enough people to always buy the extra protection...this plan cost me 2800 dollars and I had the rear end replaced 2 months ago..would have been 1500.....let us know how you make out and what the codes are and what the shop says...you could get lucky...let's hope.
The reason you can go 20mph then it slips is because the fluid is getting by the servo piston (probably broken)...same symptom as mine. The dealer told me a functioning servo piston will retain the fluid and allow pressure build up to change the gear

have u guys every changed the fluids on the trannys before the problems started?...i know ford says the trannys are maintenance free for 100k or so but i dont think anything is...good luck on it

I bought this truck 5 months ago and it was lady driven so I don't know but there has always been extended warranty on the truck even before I bought it...to answer your question on my truck is...I don't know
