- 2002 Eddie Bauer
I've had my 2002 Eddie Bauer explorer since 2005 and so far it's done fairly well by me. It now has 122,000 miles. It's also blown two spark plugs about four years apart but we've managed to keep going. There's always been a slight hum toward the rear, not a problem, but now there's a high pitched hum coming from (apparently) the right rear. It gets VERY loud after driving a while expecially at speeds above 50 mph and longer drives. Sounds frightening to me (and expensive). The mechanic checked the wheel bearings (okay) and the rear brake (a rusted rotor digging into the pad) but no joy on getting rid of the hum. He had run it on the lift and said he traced it to the transfer case. Anybody have this experience? Can it be dangerous if I just put up with the noise? I already had a problem with the front drive shaft which started a loud thumping in ordinary driving about three years ago. Couldn't afford to replace it at the time (limited senior income etc) so removed the shaft and am driving it in 2 wheel for now. Does this kind of noise mean transfer case? And is it critica/necessary to replace it? Help! Desperate senior here.
