Finally took to the truck to a transmssion shop (Aamco). First, they quoted a rebuild before checking the truck...hate that.

The transmisison threw a P0741 code. It isn't slipping currently. In fact, the tech that drove it said that nothing "seemed" wrong. Here's what I heard...1) tech said it had 100% lock-up. 2) The lock-up went from 100% to 0. 3) The engine was breaking.

What does all that mean? Additionally, I took the truck to a steep hill, put it in first gear, punched the gas and let off the pedal completely...the engine/transmission definitely slowed the truck down.

Help and recommendations please. Thanks again for all the help!!!!

So what's wrong with it?

As an aside, why would Aamco qoute a replacement price for a tranny working fine.

The gentleman behind the counter suggested that they wouldn't or couldn't know for sure what's going on unless they open up the transmission. Therefore, he wanted to rebuild it after breaking it down.

Previously, the transmission was slipping a little and produced a whining/spinning sound. Both of those symptoms went away after I changed the filter and switched approx 50% of the fluid.

Yes it was Mercon V fluid.

Hate it ask a dumb question here, but if I do a complete fluid change how do I determine which cooler hose to disconnect? I can follow the two lines that run out of the transmission (passenger side on the 5r55w). If I change anything such as the valve body or solenoid pack, I'll do the quart out/quart in flush. Again, I truly appreciate the advice you guys are giving...everything helps these days!

Should I include a friction additive next time?

In your opinion, does it make sense for me to replace the valve body (and perhaps the solenoid body while in)?

If it is possible to repair the valve body I'll certainly give it a try (based on your useful threads #98).

It's possible to rebuild a valve body if the bores are not damaged, and it's not warped. Even then, it's still possible (re-sleeve the bores & sand it down to make it flat). The solenoid block is also replaceable.
