I just finished replacing the timing chains (tensioner failed on right side). Everything is together. Starts and runs fine. BUT... both valve covers are leaking at the rear, the left side badly. I torqued to 89 in/lbs. Started from the center and worked out alternating front to rear.

Did I do this wrong? I cleaned but did not replace the gaskets (and put gasket maker on the timing cover to block joint). Should I have replaced them?

Whenever you do gasket work, replace the gaskets.. No matter what type it is. If it's a seal you have to remove in the driveline, replace it, considering its not brand new that year). Same with any gaskets. Did you torque the cover bolts starting from the center and then spiraling out?

Yes, I torqued the front cover starting from the center and then spiraled out. Thanks for double checking. I'll redo the valve cover gaskets and see what happens. Torque rear to front or center and alternate? I've seen both recommended.

I know the gaskets say they are reusable, but at what mileage. Gotta replace them IMO.
They've been compressed for over a decade, they aren't going to bounce back.

Make sure you use acetone or a throttle body spray to clean the mounting surface. Use a rag.

Once I put the new gaskets on, it was apparent they needed replacing. Lesson learned, and cheap at the price (just a mess, more work and the cost of the gaskets I should have gotten from the get-go).
