I seem to be having the same problem as others here. My ABS light has been on/off recently and the Cruise Control will not turn on. From searching it seems there are 2 possible sensors that will cause this condition. The rear speed sensor and a pressure modulator on the master cylinder. In regards to the last, does anyone know exactly what this is? I called the Ford Parts Dept but they have no idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Just had my 04 Mountaineer repaired, was the pressure modulator switch on the Master Cylinder. Appears to be the most common of the problems. Mine had the exact same systems as yours,ABS lite On and Cruise not working.
Switch sits at the end of the Master Cylinder, you can not miss it, fairly large switch.

Very good info here and thanks for sharing. I came to this site looking for info, because my '03 Explorer lost the cruise control. I had taken it to a car wash and blamed the ABS light on me/car wash + it needs new brakes soon. I had no idea there was a correlation between the two. I thought maybe the cruise control problem was a fuse, but checked and they are fine.

Any idea on how much the pressure modulator switch ran you with labor?

Same thing for me. The dealership tried blamming the remote start...

The pressure control switch is only $18 and is simple to install. You can do it your self in five minutes. Unscrew the one that is in and replace it with the new one. The plug connects to the current wiring that is already there. I changed mine over the weekend however it did not solve my problem. No abs lights and it will turn and and run for about a mile and it shuts off. Not sure what the problem is.

I called the dealer today and explained the situation. He sounded like he had seen a lot of these issues before. I told him that I thought it could be one of two things, the pressure modulator switch or the rear speed sensor. He said and I quote, "95% guaranteed it's the pressure switch"

So I ask him to just give me a ballpark price for install. He says to me $200.00
Hmmm I'm not cheap, but for the work with the low price of the part seemed odd. He explained $80 for diags, $25 for the part and $95 for labor + taxes.
