Recently the 4.6L engine has stopped running while driving down the road. Dead. Starter will not turn over. Solenoid not clicking. Replaced battery but it has happened again. I have the vehicle towed and every time after arriving at garage it starts up perfectly. I'm thinking a electrical short somewhere but what kind of short would cause the engine to stop in its tracks. And I mean it just dies, no stuttering, knocking or any signs of life. extremely frustrating. This could cost a fortune in diagnostic costs. Any ideas??? Thx in advance for your input.

Try buying a jumper battery for the moment. Electrical problems are one of the most difficult ones to fix.

Stops running

I inspected the wiring. Every cable and wire that I could physically see underneath the hood top and bottom. Befuddled

I'm no genius when it comes to wiring/stuff like this, but have you made sure everything connecting to both your starter and alternator is connected and seems to be running correctly? When it starts at the shop have you tried turning on all lights/anything that uses electricity?

I had the very same problem in my 01 sport track. I'd be driving down the road or highway and all of a sudden engine just would die, electrical was always just fine. Some times it started right up some times not, after 6 months and Ford had no clue and 2 master mechanics later I found out it was the ecm computer had a cold solder joint that when it would heat up from the engine it would become loose and cause the engine to stop. I had to order a new ecm and everything has worked great since. And there is no error code for it either

Another vote for ECU. Back in December out of nowhere my 01 5.0 started to run like complete ****, stuttering at idle, stumbling/not moving for a second or 2 when I gave it gas. Let it sit for a couple weeks then started it and it would barely run, was backfiring like crazy, stalling. Towed it to my mechanic and all he did was reset the ECU and it solved the problem.
