I have to replace the left rear axle on my 2003 Explorer. I have everything unbolted and out of the way (axle out of the hub, brakes, rotor, etc) and tried prying the axle out of the differential, but it doesn't want to pop out. Can anybody give my any pointers? Do I need to get inside the differential in order to get the axle out?
Thanks

get a piece of wood (2x4) and a hammer, point the wood at an angle and strike it out. it should pop out easily.

I did this twice already since the POS SKF seal leaked just after 2 yrs. replaced it with motorcraft.
If you don't have a seal protector when removing the axle, you could damage the seal. Better replace the seal (upgraded design) at the same time. removal and installation calls for placing the seal protector at all times.

I believe in the 2002-2010 models you need to remove a c-clip from the differential end of the axle. It should then slide right out.

Remove bottom bolts on diff cover, loosen top bolts and drain out fluid, there's then a bolt in the middle I believe you remove inside, then rotate until you see through a "window" sort of opening, push the axle you're replacing in towards the center of the car, remove the clip, then pull it out. Installation is reverse of removal. Always be sure to use a new axle nut as well a clip during install for safety.

Good luck!

I thought the 2001 + Explorers were IRS rear end?

If so I have never seen an IRS rear end with C-Clips.

I could be wrong.

Did it on my 2003 this past summer. Get a block of wood and bang it out. It will go.

There's a circlip on the shaft where it goes in. You need to break it's holding force.

Does anyone know if the differential can be dropped out by pulling the axles while lowering the differential avoiding any need to even take the wheels off?

not on IRS models, it's held by a circlip and you don't need to open the pumpkin. that's why when you buy the upgraded rear axle seal it comes with a new circlip.
