2003 Explorer transfer case problem

Thanks for letting me be involved in the forum. My Explorer is an Eddie Bauer with part-time 4-wheel drive. It has 52,000 miles. I have recently been told by my Ford dealership that I need repair on my transfer case. They have given me two options: install a rebuilt or have their shop repair it. I don't know if anyone has had any experience with this problem. I am dubious about the need, but I can tell you that there is a noticable shudder when starting to move and also going up an incline at slow speeds and even when backing up. If this repair is necessary, does anyone have a ball park figure about what it should cost? Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.

I would take it somewhere esle for a second opinion.

IMO the stealership is looking for some easy $$$$
