My friend here at school has a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante, 4 cylinder 2.4L I think is the size.

About a week ago, whenever she put it into Drive (Automatic tranny), it would take a few seconds to engage. Once it did, it would be fine.

Yesterday I pulled codes and there was nothing except for I think a 403, concerning an EGR circuit or something, but she said that had been there for a few years now.

I pulled the dipstick for the tranny fluid, and it was full, but it was BLACK, it looked like someone had put motor oil into it.

Am I right in thinking that this fluid being that bad could be the culprit? I'm going to change out the fluid for her this weekend (Knee surgery in a few hours) and hope that fixes it. I'd rather try something cheaper then replacing a whole transmission.

are you sure its a 03 with a 4 cylinder.

cause my parents have a 00 mitsubishi diamante es and it has the 3.5 liter V6.

it cant be a 4 cylinder cause the older diamante came with the 4 or 6 cylinder.

it should say on the engine cause it says it on my parents diamante it says V6 and its 3.5 liter

Sorry this is a late reply guys, I had knee surgery last week and am just now getting back to my habits.

Sam, you're right. I was mistaken on the engine size, it's the 6 cylinder.

Still haven't done the fluid swap yet, waiting for my knee to get better, can't put any substantial weight on it yet.

Jeff, totally understand, I told her we'd start there in case that helps the problem, and if it fixes it cool, if not she's **** outta luck.
