2003 XLT
My POS 2003 XLT is constantly giving me problems. It's latest episode of kicking me in the junk is this: When ever I accelerate, especially going up hills, the AWD keeps trying to kick in. The damn banging in the front end can go on just so long before it destroys something. If I put the POS into 4x4 high, it obviously stops. I hate this AWD crap. I know the rear speed sensor is functioning and it has two new front wheels bearings. Why is this happening, and can I disable the AWD while retaining the ability to manually activate the 4x4 by pushing the button? Thanks.

Is there a brown wire mod yet for the 2003.

I posted this message in another thread about the 4x4 not working. When I read your post I remembered that my 2002 Explorer did the same thing and was acting strange and would shutter and go in 4x4 mode by it self. Then it just died alltogether and I had no 4 wheel drive only 2. The lights did not work in the dash and the system was dead.
I fixed the problem by replacing the 4X4CM module that is located behind the glove compartment. The number of my old broken module that came from the factory is 1L24-7H473-AF. Ford has a updated module. The part number for the new updated one is 1L2Z-7E453-A.
I ordered the new one and took 15 minutes to replace and then everything works!! Shop around for the part since every dealership has a different price on the part.
Sounds like this is your problem!!!!!
Good Luck, John

Thanks. I'll give that a try before I burn this thing to the ground.
