I have a 2004 Explorer with a bad 5R55S. Its an AWD/4WD Eddie Bauer.

$2K rebuild price from cheapest/best rebuild guy within 100 miles. He read the codes, test drove & gave me the verdict.

I'm thinking of looking for a low mileage used tranny instead. He will install.

Will any year/model 5R55S swap in? What are my limitations? 2002-2005 explorers/mountianeers only or can I swap in others? I know Ford used these transmissions in other vehicles (Lincoln, T-Bird).

Any help is appreciated.

@Terry O.
Be careful about not getting a 5R55W, they look identical to 5R55S, but have different gear ratio, throwing off computer. I cannot say whether any other model, like Lincoln, would work, sorry, but personally, I would stick with Explorer, probably not one newer than '04. Some parts might have to be swapped, such as tail housing, if from non-4WD. imp

OK,

I found a rebuilt (32K on rebuild) from an 05' Mercury Mountaineer. 4.0, 4wd. #'s on trany are 4l2p 7000-bb .
Ford Parts says both vehicles use the same tranny. See: Automatic Transmission Assy | FordUS

Will it fit?
