Subtitle: Am I getting screwed?
I have a 2004 Explorer that began idling rough (shaking whenever the car is just sitting there) a few weeks ago. I know nothing whatsoever about cars. I checked out Yelp and asked around and finally settled on a garage that had great reviews.
Their first thought was that I had a wiring problem. I thought this sounded like it could be it, since the emergency brake light is always on even when the emergence brake is. I didn't get where bad wires would make the car shake but I thought I probably had bad wires. They said it would be $460 to fix, and I (reluctantly) said OK.
That wasn't it.
Then, they said they thought it was the MAP Sensor, and that they would order it and replace that if it wasn't too expensive, and if that didn't fix it they would eat the cost. I said go ahead.
They said that helped the problem, but that it still wasn't fixed. The Ford dealership suggested some diagnostic/reconfiguration or something (his phone was cutting out) that would cost $120.
I had to pick my car up on Friday for the weekend, so they told me I could do that and just pay for the parts they've used so far, and that we would figure out how much labor to be charged later.
I'm taking it back in, and I want to know if they're taking me for a ride or if this sounds legitimate. The invoice I paid for on Friday shows this:
6 spark plugs ($9 ea.) - $54
1 set IGN wires - $169
1 EGR valve assembly - $178
Does this invoice sound right? How much should I expect them to charge me for labor on these issues that didn't fix my problem? I'm only getting the car fixed to sell it, so anything above and beyond what was needed to get the car to stop shaking is wasted on me.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!
