Getting ready to replace EGR valve on 2004 V6 Explorer. Looks as though some of the nuts are a bit difficult to get to -- any suggestions?

I just did mine and my X is a V8. Two screws (10mm) I think? and one 1/16 open ended wrench. Took off a electric plug and a small rubber hose. Took like less than hour. The V6 is a little different. I bought the egr ( Motorcraft)for about 138.00 at RockAuto YouTube shows V6's.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I took a close look at the EGR valve on my V6 Explorer. It's connected to the exhaust manifold by a tube with a 1-1/16 nut at the valve. The valve is connect to the air intake manifold with two 10mm bolts.

I do not have a 1-1/16 combination wrench; going to my local hardware store tomorrow (22 mile round trip) to get one.

I can get a 10mm socket and ratchet on the two 10mm bolts, although the one on the driver's side is a sonofabitch to get to. Using a breaker bar and 10mm socket I loosened the 10mm bolt on the passenger side, sprayed it with PB Blaster; sprayed the 1-1/16 nut and both 10mm bolts with PB; left the hood up. Will order the EGR valve today and apply more PB Blaster a couple of times every day until the new one arrives then tackle the job.

Yes, 1 1/16 wrench. Good luck on the replacement.

IIRC I did mine with an adjustable wrench since that nut is so big. . Using the PB blaster for a few days is a great idea. It's not a hard repair but some of the bolts are facing backwards. You have to remove the air cleaner and stuff up to the throttle body IIRC you have to remove the throttle body too, might as well clean it while you're at it. None of that is very difficult.

I think I had a power ratchet which really speeds things up. If you don't have one and want to get one get the kind with the long neck you won't regret having that little bit of extra reach.
