2006 XLT Ford Explorer
I need wisdom! I purchased my new 2004 Explorer for $350.00. The guy who sold it to me thought it was a 2006. The body and interior are in excellent condition. (Arizona Truck) It has over 180,000 miles on it. The transmission looks new relative to the rest of the engine. The previous owner's daughter overheated it and killed it. I towed it to my trusted repair shop. It needs a new engine. I looked at the heads. Over time so much antifreeze went through this motor that the combustion chambers were partially eaten away. Lots of antifreeze washed into the cylinders. End of story on that 4.0.

I can purchase a new 4.0 with a three year unlimited mileage warranty for $2700. (No tin). The labor to pull the old on install the new booked out at $1350. I would also put in a new water pump, alternator, serpentine belt, and hoses.

Is it worth the investment?

I don't think I'd put $4000 into a car that you bought for $350. Then what happens if the transmission goes and it needs another $3000.

My 2 cents, get rid of that car.

Tom

Is the replacement engine in question from a Ford dealership?

The reman is through a car parts franchise. The brand is ATK

OTOH, you would have a vehicle worth perhaps $5000, with less dough in it than that. Then, using it would pose the same risks as if you had bought a similar, good-running Explorer for $5000, which could also crap out unexpectedly, same as the one in question. imp

You could get a low mileage engine with all the tin from a wrecking yard from 1100-1600 dollars. I'd go that route. Just change the tensioners and guides while its out.

let me know if you decide to part it out. I have an 02 that needs a transmission. I am in phoenix as well

Excellent body and interior, plus possible rebuilt trans? I would do what Number4 said and look for a decent used engine, do the PM before installing.

Thank you!

Hey all, you advice has been valuable! I have started searching for used motors. Not an easy task to find a low mileage 4.0. Please let me know if you have any good sources.

See if you have an LKQ near you.
