- 2005 Explorer XLT AWD
Just bought a used 2005 XLT 4x4.
It has the typical Explorer issues including the Inop 6 CD changer.
Mine also has an issue with searching channels by itself at times.
I looked online and found the link below and was able to remove the 5 CD's it had in it from the previous owner. (it didn't show ANY on it, just a "Load Error")

Radio Removal:

While I had it apart I took the 4 T-8 Torx screws (2 top and 2 bottom) from the front display and removed the panel.
Remove the 10 T-8 Torx screws from the back of the display / control board.
The volume knob has to be popped off also before doing the step below.
Carefully remove the circuit board from the button panel.
Take the rubber key buttons out (2 each) and clean them with a cloth.
Use the pink eraser of a regular pencil and lightly polish the contacts for each switch to remove any oxidation.
Reassemble the keypad and control panel.
Reinstall the radio.
Mine worked perfectly after performing the above.
