Just bought a 2005 explorer xlt 4.0v6 4x4 with advance trac with 175k miles (high, but the price point was great) for my girlfriend.

I paid $800 for the vehicle, it needs some tranny work, but hoping it will be the solenoid or something else minor. If not then I am buying a second parts vehicle for the tranny and a few other small common problems. Total investment with parts vehicle will be less than $1,500 with a good condition book value on the complete vehicle of more than $5k here in NH seems like a great buy and a little project on the side for myself.

I will definitely be searching these forums for a while doing these fixes.

update:

Truck is running perfect, no tranny problems currently. I believe the battery must have died on the previous owner and the PCM may have caused the tranny to act up. When I test drove it, I could hardly drive in drive, reverse was non-existent during the few minutes I was able to drive it. Ever since I got it home and charged the battery and let it run for about an hour and then took it out for a few miles it has ran great. I guess I am lucky for now and a parts vehicle isn't needed.

thanks, I am pretty sure I have read atleast one thread on every topic in the 2002-2005 section LOL. I probably won't have many post as I have forum experience with other vehicles I own, so I am pretty knowledgeable with the search feature.

Tranny fluid and filter change is among the first things I am doing. So far I have done the air filter, oil change, blower motor resistor, serpentine belt, and blend door actuator.

next up, tranny fluid and filter change, spark plugs, and wires.

I am pretty sure that if you google common 3rd generation explorer problems, the picture would be my explorer LOL.

I replaced the blower motor resistor, blend door actuator, and now just fixed the broken wires in the door boot!!! All relatively inexpensive, but just a PITA.
