Good morning!

My name is Dionne and I'm a 25/F looking for some advice on the current problem with my 05 Explorer XLS.

About 18 months ago I had Sears change my brakes, and of course they f*d them up. Had them changed by Sears (under their warranty) two other times. Once in September 2007 and the other time in November 2007. In early February, I was pulling out of my apartment complex, and when I started to press my brakes I got a pumping on my brake pad which disabled my ABS and my ADVTRAC. So, I got smart(er) and took my Explorer to a family trusted mechanic. He replaced all 4 brakes and front rotars. The mechanic replaced the right rear ABS sensor but that didn't solve the problem. The dealer says that the Rear axle tone ring is now broken and I guess I wanted to get information from someone that knows something about this...because frankly, I'm totally lost!

Thanks to whomever responds!

d.

Welcome to this forum! You could see if the ring is broken by removing the sensor, and looking inside with a light. Do you have any problems with your cruise control, speedometer, transmission changing gears erratically, or the speedometer not working properly? If not, it might be something else.

No, I'm not having any of the other problems you mentioned.

When I push on the brake, I get the pumping...a very heavy, strong pumping coming back at me.

The dealer has the Explorer now and is telling me they want to charge me $450 to fix the problem.

First lets analyze what this pumping could be. Pull the fuse for the ABS, and see if it still pumps. If it still does, then check to see if the rotors are warped or if one of the caliper bolts came loose.

How do you suggest I pose these possible diagnosis tactics to the dealer?

Let's say they pull the ABS fuse, and the problem persists...the problem is the brake pads or the rotors? Or Calliber bolts came loose? Could there be another explanation?

Yes, it happens for the first few times I step on the brake, everytime I turn on my car. Once I get over 10 mph and step on the brake (a few times), the ABS light will come on and the ADVTRAC light will come on and I'll get a message "ADVTRAC off"

Thank you so much! I've sent in the list of the possibilities you've mentioned to the dealer. Hopefully he comes back with a good response! I'll keep you updated and pick your brain! =)

Thank you very much for all your help!

welcome
