2005 ford explore sport trac XLT 4WD Hey guys, I'm fairly new and I never thought I get on one of these but I'm heavily invested into these trucks. I bought it as just a daily but not I'm making it look awesome, anyways I need help just recently I had changed the radiator myself and no I didn't change the hoses like I should've but thank God no problems thus far and during this the trans cooler lost a little bit of fluid and possibly got air in the system??? Anyways I put it all back together the way it should be and then when I get up to around 2,300-2,500 RPM this little rattling noise happens it almost sounds like squirting or splurging but it's a metallic noise. I tested to see if it would make this noise when parked to test if it was a rattle or the engine or the chain that's in these SOHC. So I put in park and neutral and then revved it up and ..... nothing no noise nothing. So what I think is the problem is that there's air in my transmission or I think it might be my left wheel hub assembly. It makes the usual grrrrrrrrrr noise when driving around I replaced the right one because it was horrible. Or could it be some loose shielding or exhaust. Please give me your opinions.

so its RPM based not speed based? if so id wonder if its like on this one where under medium to heavy load it would sound like lifter tap a bit. int away though lol. cat shield also loose on this so it taps. got a video?

No but it's get quiet some times and at times it doesn't make the noise I'm wondering if it could possibly that it's driving me crazy tbh, but it all started when I changed my radiator.

It's definitely not that because when I put it in park and hit the gas it doesn't make any single kind of noise. Just it revs up.

I've seen this before
Clogged spray bars

Example my old engine with 200k on it all original

Look it the surface of the camshaft lobes the spray bars is not providing any lubrication

Ill bet it rattles right in between gears At 3 k rpm
when there's no load on the motor as soon as you put a load on it the sound is gone

Notice all of the timing stuff is fine
Drove me nuts for a couple of years I finally figured it out when I bought a new engine

no not exactly, when its under low/no load its fine its only under moderate load at 2.5 it goes away during the shift

Not saying this is the OP's "rattle" issue. Just info regarding primary tensioner R&R if needed. GL

Found in "Similar Threads" on bottom of linked page above.

As far as fixing the spray bars
pull the valve covers and look with a mirror
if they are clogged up remove them and clean them then reinstall
Ask how if you need more help
I try to stick to the easy stuff first before jumping rite to timing
Either way you are removing the valve covers For inspection

Your in for some work

cool, ok. if im being honest seems to have vanished sometime around this summer, so for now its out of sight out o mind ;) but will keep in mind if it returns

Could the belt tensioner be causing this issue?

Before I pulled those valve covers I would run some BG cleaner through that motor!
