I started up the Explorer yesterday morning to a loud metallic clicking noise in the driver's side head (or at least near the top of the engine). It's stronger on deceleration, or when the rpms are dropping while in park after blipping the throttle.
I checked the oil in it, and up until this point we have not had to worry about it, as it hasn't used ANY measurable amount of oil until now. This time, it was a quart low. So I added a quart and started it back up-no help.
We drove it over to the local dealership and they're going to take a look at it. I'm just wondering if any other '06 owners have had problems, as well as if anyone can make an educated guess as to the source of the problem.
I have two lines of thought:
Either something happened to the engine to allow it to use oil (valve guide, etc.)......
OR, The oil level is extremely sensitive in these 3V engines due to the oil pickup location or other, and being a quart low caused something to go bad in one of the heads.
Also, my wife told me she had to really get on it on Friday, and spun the tires while making a left turn from a stop.
The truck has just a tad over 13K on the ODO and I put synthetic oil into it (Amsoil) at the 5,000 mile mark, and changed it again at 10K.
