I have a 06 Mountaineer 4.6 AWD with 91,000 mi. that recently has had some issues. The drivetrain will clunk and jump when I put it into gear until I get to 5 mph, then it shifts and drives fine until I come to a stop. Sometimes then it will want to lunge forward and make the clunking sound again. The wrench light has come on one time and I assume it was in limp mode because I couldn't accelerate. I was only at the end of my block so I put it back in the garage and took my wife's car that day. The next day it drove fine, except for slow speed clunking.

Any ideas?
Thanks!:(

Welcome to the forum.
you have 6r60 tranny behind your 4.6, and they are known for jumping/jerking when coming to a stop. Do a research on this forum and you will find dozens of posts about that.

Recently, my 06 developed some clunking in drivetrain. Usually those are caused by lack of grease in driveshaft splines, but also when the tranny or differential rubber mounts are shot.

I still need to crawl under mine.

I really don't like the sound of the first part... it sounds like 1st gear may have been damaged. Really hard to say, but Explorer PL is right in that if you have not ever had the transmission reprogrammed you need to start with that and when/if the reprogramming gets done have them do a general inspection of the driveline.

It happens when I am in reverse also. I am bringing it in tomorrow to get it looked at. Hopefully the tranny is in good shape.

Well it turns out the #8 cylinder was miss-firing again. Had 3 coils and plugs replaced at 76,500. The miss-fire in the coil caused a bunch of codes to come up on the computer. They are replacing the coil and will test drive when they finish. Hopefully that's all it was.

# 8 will always misfire after a while due to water leak from the windshield.

I am on my 4th plug and second coil, and that should be it since I installed a "gutter" under the windshield.

Search for "water in plug wells" in this forum.
