2006 xlt tapping from dashboard

There is a tapping coming from behind my dashboard it came out of the blue
At first it would go for a while and stop now it won't stop at all
Any help would be appreciated

Since the description is so vague, it is hard to say what it might be. However, do you feel any pulsing in the brake pedal in conjunction with the noise? If so, it might be the ABS system acting up.
We really need more specifics like location (high or low, right side or left), and frequency (slow or fast and high pitched or low pitched). Does it do it when idling in park?

it taps only when the temperature is set on heat not on cold but now the heat doesn't work what so ever so it just makes a clicking/tapping sound and produces no heat

it sounds like its coming from the center behind the radio
its a steady tap kind of like a drum beat

Sounds like one of the flap servos is shot. They are little gear boxes with cheap nylon gears in them, When the gears strip they quit operating the doors and keep trying to find their position. I do not know the layout of the Exp HVAC but they would have several servos including one that lets fresh air in.
