2007 EB Explorer died in server rain storm, runs now, but with issues.

I had been driving my 2007 Eddie Bauer Explorer today when a very severe thunderstorm hit. Some parts of the roads I had been driving on had quite a bit of water on them, with me splashing through them shortly before the incident. I had been slowing down my speed, coming up to a stop sign, when I noticed the car started to run a little weird, almost as if it were running out of fuel. I pulled over to the side of the road since I knew it would die. It stalled of course. I sat there for a few seconds and tried to start it. It started but immediately died right after. I tried this about 4 times, waiting around 10-20 seconds between tries before giving up and getting out and pushing it about 200 yards in the rain to a parking lot, which was an amazing experience.

After pushing it all that way I got back into it and caught my breath. This was about 10 minutes after the last time I tried to start it before I tried it again. It started and held, but idles at 500rpm and shakes. It won't rev higher than 3000rpm either and also now has a blinking 'check engine' light. I was able to drive it a little more afterwards, the rain had died down a bit at that point. It still ran pretty rough. I spent about 5 minutes driving it slowly in the parking lot before parking it again. I'm at work currently and have a buddy who can check the codes for me afterwards.

I greatly appreciate any help provided! ~ Car has 100k miles on it.

When did this happen and v6 or v8 engine?
My best guess is you have water where it shouldn't be. It could be electrical or mechanical how does the engine sound when it is running besides wanting to die?

Pull the codes and post back that will tell a lot.

You’ll need the codes as mentioned above. Otherwise, it could be just about anything.

Blinking check engine light is a gross misfire. Could be water got on the coil or coil wires and shorted out a coil. Driving thru water could aspirate water into the engine, causing a connecting rod to bend and break. Water is not compressible and always wins.

Usually that is accompanied by a terrible sound... Hopefully you just got water on some electrical component.

Do not drive like this - the blinking means your cat converter is getting trashed.

My 2000 Expedition had similar issues. Turns out Ford placed the ECU module in a place the sunroof drained water right on top of it. I replaced several of those modules. Maybe water issues and Ford electronics is a recurring theme. I would look at where your engine control module is located and if it could have gotten wet.

My 07 limited 4.6 was doing this. Codr said I had a bad coil. Replaced it. Same thing couple weeks later. Replaced it. 2 front cylinders. While replacing the coil I found a wire that the insulation was cracked and had exposed wire. Spliced in dont new wire. Been driving in the rain with no problems. *knocking on wood*
