A friend of mine has a 2007 EB 4x4, v6 with 116k miles. While backing out of the driveway, she heard a big bang and lost reverse, the car drives forward.

Is there some common issue with the reverse ? I read everywhere about some solenoids, spring, servo ?

What version of the 5R55 is there ?

Thanks

I don't have a lot to add for your friend. However, since I experience the same loud thunk when I shift into reverse, I do have a temporary solution that works for me. While I'm rounding up cash for a new trans, I found that applying pressure to the brake pedal before and while I shift into reverse, I seem to be able to retain my reverse gear - for now...

Hopefully this works for a few more weeks before the dreaded loss of reverse.

I have a 2006 EB 4.0 4x4. 87000 miles. Having tried the 2007 trans from salvage yard(car drives aA rated part) installed it and didn't have reverse. Having reverse fixed only. Will trade it in on Toyota or Honda. Radiator went out at 46000. No warranty. I'm convinced that Ford is selling junk to stay in business. Always been a Ford guy. No longer.

I took my 08 in for an estimate at two shops and to test my trans. I need a new trans. 3rd & 4th are slamming into gear. Long wait for reverse, then a huge thump into reverse, if at all.

I'm not sure if these trucks are poorly designed or some corporate executive decided to push out the maintenance schedule that should be performed much earlier and more often than Ford advised. It also seems that the members here who serviced their trans early and often have less rebuilds, my opinion.

Part of my rebuild will include a bigger oil cooler with a thermostat initiated fan...plus a oil temp gauge in the cabin. I plan on servicing early and often...
