My wife/kids got stranded twice this last week with the truck not able to start. The engine turns but doesn't start. Both times by the time I get to look at the truck it starts right up.
The truck runs fine, no stalling or performance issues.
There is no dummy lights coming on.
I found the 14 steps to figure out why not starting issues, but again by the time I see it it starts and runs great (so how do i troubleshoot???).

Not sure if related - I had just replace the thermostat housing a week prior to issues after the 1st no start checked the crank sensor which was a bit wet with coolant but dried it out it started and ran fine for a day and the 2nd day is when it did not start for the 2nd time. Got it towed home and it started 1st try.

Our family mechanic said he has had similar issue with remote starters - we have our aftermarket one installed for about 8 years now with no issues - could it be this???

If it matters it has 94K miles / eddie bauer V6. I did try step 1 and confirmed dummy engine light is not burnt out. I hear the fuel priming prior to turning the key fully. Battery is about 1 year old.

My thoughts is it runs great so must not be fuel issue - it does start time most of the time(18 out of 20 or so attempts) so ignition system s/b ok. So i'm wondering if it really could be remote starter or something is in early stages of failure...

Thanks for your help!!

Yes it could. I've never had an aftermarket remote starter installed - but in my years of trawling this site and the rest of the web I've seen lots of issues caused by aftermarket remote starters and frankly anything installed by a minimum wage worker at the likes of any major retailer. The longevity of any electrical install depends on the quality of the wiring connections. They age - if they were done improperly they age badly.
