My engine started developing a tap on the top end. Tap got louder and louder. I knew it was the camshaft hitting a dry rocker arm.
I had the top-end rebuilt. New camshafts new rocker arms new lifters new timing chain.
Now when I start it up it starts rough and noisy but within 2 seconds it sounds great runs quiet idles nice. While it is still cold I can drive down the road and it gets to operating temperature.... the engine loses power and sounds like it's going to grenade.
Now the second mechanic I have taken it to is telling me the engine just needs to be swapped out.
I mean seriously it runs pretty damn good when the engine is first cold. How the hell does it need a new engine??

Does your temperature gauge go above normal temp? It sounds more like an overheating issue than a mechanical one. When it overheats, the engine is designed to go into a 'limp' mode to reduce the heat.

It might be worth getting a second, and even third, opinion on this from other mechanics. Also, it is hard to given advice without knowing more info than you have given. Maybe uploading a video of the engine running and making the noise will help. As would knowing where the sound is coming from in the engine.

No. Engine comes up to normal operating temperature. And that's when the problems start. I could just start it up let it idle all day long and everything's kosher but as soon as you hit the pedal( after it warms up) it sounds like the timing advances 25 degrees in an instant...

Make sure everything got hooked back up. Make sure you check the wiring on the VCT solenoid.
