my hanes manual says the 'fuse 29' should be the ignition fuse but they only go up to 28!? found other docs that say fuse 8 is the ignition fuse - but according to the wiring diagram i'm looking at, that fuse shouldn't have power when the key is off (but it does). am i looking at the wrong fuse!?

Welcome to the forum. Your owners manual should have the fuse box layout for your vehicle.

Here's the PDF version: https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/10expog2e.pdf

Page 312 shows fuse 8 ignition switch power, fuse 28 Climate Controls.

You might want to post or link to the wiring diagram you're looking at so someone can follow along.

What symptoms, problems are you seeing, trying to fix? Is there an OBD2 or Ford specific error code set?

thanks j_c, i have a no crank, no start situation.
i had the transmission replaced and had shifter problems since - after driving around for a bit, i would stop and couldn't get it into park... then i couldn't get it into reverse! i thought maybe the shift cable had been disconnected, but it was still on. i snapped the cable off the selector on the tranny, manually pushed it all the way into park, then re-attached and i could drive again (for short distance), then same problem. i've replaced the shifter and shift cable... no change. so i drove it to a mechanic (that was recommended by a transmission place), told him the whole story, and had a pretty bad experience. in the end, after 3 weeks, they couldn't even start the thing (i brought it there to have the shifting looked at), so i towed it back to my house - now trying to get it started so i can take it to another mechanic!!
so - i suspect they messed up the dtr/park/neutral protection switch, but trying to trace the electrical going to that. checked the fuse 11 and starter relay in the battery junction box (under the hood) - fuse is not blown, apply 9volts to relay and it clicks over. but if i have someone turn the key with my finger on the relay, its not clicking. (put a meter on it to dbl check and nothing's getting there).
according to the attached wiring, the wiring goes from that fuse 11 to ignition switch, then to the fuse 29 in the fuse box by the park brake...so, i didn't think there would be any power to that fuse (though its not 29 like the diagram says, its 8) until key was turned?
totally open to suggestions! gonna look for an updated diagram, here's what i got (from haynes manual for explorer 02-10):

a ha!! just found another wiring diagram (freeautomechanic.com) that has a different layout - and the fuse is BEFORE the ignition (and is correctly numbered)! so i think i've made progress!

Transmissions aren't my forte, especially trying to guess what someone did to make it worse when something was already wrong, but yeah I'd also suspect they messed up the tranny protection switch somehow.

When you wrote "I had the transmission replaced" I infer that to mean someone else did the work? Shifting problems started immediately afterwards? Was there no warranty or recourse for you to have that (shop?) take a look at it and make it right?

That's about all I have. Good luck!

its actually a long story... but bottom line is: i bought a reman trans, had my 'normal' mechanic put it in, there were other (non-related) problems that i could fix, so i took the vehicle and did those, and wasn't real happy with their response when i said it still wasn't shifting properly. probably a little petty on my part - but its just a shifter, how hard can it be! :/ so now i'd like to take it back to the guys that swapped it.. but i dont want to take it back with an unknown problem! (one that i could potentially fix!). the tranny has a 3yr warranty on it so if it IS the trans causing the shifting issues (which i suspect), i should be ok - but need a certified/registered mechanic to make that diagnosis for the company to replace.
its my son's vehicle and he's driving mine, so hasn't been a rush - now i'm getting tired of paying insurance on it while it sits in the garage!

thanks for your posts - i'm gonna take that switch out next, gonna remove the front drive shaft just to give me space (replacing that was one of the 'non-related' problems i just did a few weeks ago!), but thats for another night.
