This is a very recent purchase for me. Has 132k miles. Carfax shows nothing so no history available.

My prior Explorer was 97 5.0 4R70W AWD which I love. Transmissions feel very very different which is making me question if my 6R80 is functioning normal.

In my 97 from either a full stop or slow speed if I stepped down hard on the accelerator and kept it down vehicle would speed up and RPMs and Speed would both go up until the tranny shifted. Then RPMs go down and then RPMs and Speed would both go up until the tranny shifted. etc.

In the 2010, any light touch of the accelerator sends RPMs spiralling instantly by 500-600rpms - a real spike. The car pulls and accelerates but not remotely in line with the spike in RPMs. It does accerayte quick so very soon I'm going 85-90 and it only shifted twice...

What do you think? What can I do to test it cycling through all 6 speeds?

i think it can be normal, since the TC unlocks when ya touch the gas. in the old ones, they keep the TC locked to save fuel, until ya fully step down and itll downshift. similiar to the old torqueflites ;) itll unlock TC to send more power and put it in the powrband. this is more common with newer lockup trans in my experience they seem to unlock faster than these

Yep very knowledgeable fella right here and yep that's true my 5r55e does the same unless i let off the throttle and then get on it but if i hold steady throttle and then get on it the tc stays locked unless i stomp it or hold it half way

The shift strategy between the 5R55 and 6R80 is very different. The 4.6L 3V engine has a lot more power and torque then the 2V version. The 6R80 has two overdrive gears and closer ratio gears in general and uses clutches instead of bands like the 5R55. Add these differences together and the PCM will downshift more often to improve efficiency and gas mileage. With two overdrive gears (5th and 6th) it will downshift much sooner than the 5R55 does. Sixth gear is very steep and a small increase in engine load will cause it to downshift to 5th and then to 4th if the load increases further. If the transmission is shifting smoothly in lower load driving then I don't think there is any issues. Also, if you haven't serviced the transmission yet the old fluid could be causing minor shifting anomalies.

The first row is for the engine swap. The next row is for the supercharger and making the engine ready for it. After it is finished and he has to make more power then there will be another row. 😏
