Just to follow up, I went ahead an replaced the cooling fan unit and now the AC blows cold at idle. I went with a non OEM brand from O'Reilly. Not the bottom of the barrel Doorman or whatever it's called, but definitely not the most expensive one. The unit I bought came with a fan control unit. I will say it looked a bit cheaply made but so far so good.
Removal and installation was pretty straightforward. I only had to remove the air filter box. Took a bit of angling to pull the unit out but I got it.
Thanks to all who chimed in to help me out.
Now on to the next problem, troubleshooting the old P0300 random misfire code. Fun stuff.
