I'm considering buying a tow behind RV with a dry weight of 4800 lbs but with gear, 6000 lbs, will exceed the factory specs. What problems might I expect towing 6k cross country on interstates? Downsides?

That it is illegal.. that your insurance company may not cover you if you are towing illegally. You open yourself up to lawsuits.. And you can be fined if caught my the police.

As far as the vehicle, premature failure on parts, not being able to stop in time, trailer sway.

For my safety and everyone elses on the road, please dont tow above the ratings.

6000 cross country? You're better off with a f150 or expedition. Towing it to the next state occasionally.... Sure the explorer would be fine.

I'd look at a smaller or lighter rig. Check out livinlite.com.

Welcome to the Forum badddgolfer.:wavey:
Best advice given so far is 'Don't do it'. You risk putting too much strain on the engine, transmission and brakes, not to mention putting other people at risk. You may also exceed the ability of the trailer sway control to do its job effectively. I would also assume that you would be putting your vehicle's warranty at risk of being voided.

Aside from any legal issues you might have, You'd run the risk of killing the drivetrain. And since you've announced your intent in a public forum, Ford would be aware of the post (since they have reps who hang out on the forums) and they would deny any warranty claim.

I wouldn't do it. I towed my 4,400 load travel trailer this summer from Montreal and Myrtle Beach round trip. Trunk was empty. Went well but can't imagine adding 1,600 pounds!
