2013 high RPM Like Engine Noise At Highway Speeds

Hi all,

I have been reviewing the forum for a bit now trying to find a more definitive answer to what I suspect is non factory performance. We have a 2013 Explorer (limited) and at highway speed it produces drive train noise that has the truck sound as though it is in a lower gear then it is - like it is in 5th gear when it is 6th. The engine RPM is at around 2000-2200 at about 65-70mph. This seems reasonable.

From what I have read these are supposed to be quiet vehicles so I cannot expect this be a normal/accepted characteristic. Originally I thought this might be attributed to tire noise, however swapping the factory tires with my winters, the same noise is there.

This sounds almost like it could be the rear differential or transfer case. I am wondering if anyone can provide some insight into this issue as described or if anyone has any ideas.

Have noticed any burning smell or oil on the ground. It is possible that it could be the PTU (Power Transfer Unit). There is no actual transfer case. The PTU is located at about the mid point.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the prompt response. I have not noticed any burning smell or oil on the ground. However if I remember correctly there appears to be what looks like a drain or filling plug on the upper half of the PTU, which seemed a little wet like a worn seal. This is a few weeks since I looked last. But I will have another look when I am back in town.

I will post a video/sound recording. That is a good idea.

I took a couple video recordings but unfortunately it is difficult to make out the noise I am referring to. However a very accurate description of the sound is that it is like the truck is always contending/pushing up against the engine braking mechanism even when at highway cruising speeds.

I am going to capture another a video/audio recording with the hope it is a bit more clear, but hopefully in the meantime this helps to provide an idea of what I am talking about.
