2013 XLT 4X4
Looking at a 2013 Explorer xlt 4x4 a client of mine has. 130k mi and it just started to hunt for gears. Driving along in any gear with pretty constant pedal on flat ground and the tranny is hunting up and down. I don't think it's the shuddering symptom I see so many complaints about online. just feels like an intermittent gear shift, sometimes making a perceived driveline KLUNK . I know its a long shot but would anyone have any thoughts on what could be the issue? I Drove it for a half hour, no codes at all. Will a tranny flush and fluid with friction modifier help?.. he is looking for $8k for it which seems like a super price, vehicle is one owner very clean.. I love the truck, it drives great, is responsive, comfortable... Feels much better than my hulky 2007 Expedition EL but if it needs a new tranny I'm probably not interested. Someone please give me some ideas ...thank you in advance!

Walk away, my $0.02

Thanks for your input, but does that come from experience with this issue or just your opinion in general

Any transmission work, aside from literally just changing the fluid, will be costly as the entire thing has to be removed to even open the case. If this thing is already slipping and hunting, plus it's 10 years old, a rebuild or at least a clutch plate replacement is probably not far off. If you're in love with this vehicle, and it does sounds like it would be fun, then I would factor in a few $k to the asking price, which may already be the case at $8k to some extent looking at bluebook value for that mileage. Asking if you could reset the PCM to see if it learns "better" shift points could perhaps either help fix the issue or confirm there's a mechanical issue in the transmission(as well as flush out fresh codes if it was recently reset to wipe codes prior to putting up for sale, but this could take a while for it to re-find codes, up to 150 miles for some I believe). A flush and conditioner additive will just be optimistic bandaids at best. I would def check the transmission fluid for a decent red color and def notice any particles. With a 4x4 you would ideally also want to check the transfer case and differential. Check if you can wiggle the drive axle to see if there's any play. Check the engine oil for the dreaded milky white color indicating a water pump leak. Also see how it does in 2WD drive mode(if it can switch). If you end up getting it and have to do transmission work, be sure to get the "permanent" filter inside replaced. This could be a deal of a vehicle, but it could also be someone trying to get out of it before the fertilizer hits the windmill.
